Protect your identity

How do I stop the monitoring connection feature?

You might be aware of the fact that most of the software audio players connect to the Internet, providing you with additional information about the CD or MP3 tracks that you load in the
playlist. Some of this information, such as song
title and album art is useful but the Windows Media Player that comes as a default bundle with Windows XP operating system also identifies your copy of Media Player to the parent site. According to the documentation in the help file:

The server uses this unique identifier to monitor your connection. By monitoring your connection, the server can make adjustments to increase the playback quality and to alert you about events that occur when receiving streams over the Internet. Not everyone will be thrilled by this feature, and many might consider this as an invasion of privacy.

If youre perturbed by this exchange of information, heres how to disable it.   Launch Windows Media Player, and go to Tools | Options.  Click on the Player tab and, under "Player settings", disable the option fiConnect to the Internet.  In the "Tools | Options" tab itself, click on Library.  Ensure that the option " Retrieve additional information from the Internet " is disabled. After youre done, click on Apply.
